Vilnius residents' support for the CHP under construction keeps growing

An annual population survey confirms that three quarters of Vilnius residents favour the CHP plant under construction near Gariūnai and are looking forward to it helping lower heating costs — for the third year running, Spinter Research surveyed capital city residents about waste incineration and the plant.

Attitudes toward using waste as fuel for energy generation remain positive, with 82% viewing it favourably or very favourably. The share of respondents with a favourable view of the plant grew by 4 percentage points to 76%, while the share with an unfavourable view fell by 7 points to 13%.

The most commonly cited benefit of waste incineration is the reduction of waste going to landfills in the Vilnius region, an opinion shared by 83% of respondents this year. Many also hoped it would help reduce post-sorting waste volumes or lower heating costs in the city.

Still, the survey found that 80% of residents feel they lack sufficient information about the plant's construction. In response, a new website, www.vkj.lt, was launched to provide comprehensive project information and news; the internet remains the main information source, followed by television, social media, radio, and the press.

The Spinter Research survey of capital city residents included 1,010 respondents over the age of 18.
