With war raging in Europe and energy prices reaching unprecedented heights, public attention has shifted to problems that affect everyone directly — but climate change cannot be forgotten.
Tvari Lietuva and international energy company Ignitis Group joined the global initiative to mark 24 October as the International Day Against Climate Change, aiming to draw attention to the fact that there is not much time left for bold, transformative changes that could help avoid the most severe consequences of climate change for humanity.
Scientists estimate that negative impacts on population health and wealth caused by climate change cannot be avoided if the Earth's average atmospheric temperature rises more than 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels — and without decisive action, this threshold could be exceeded before 2030. To draw attention to this, Tvari Lietuva and Ignitis Group placed a special countdown "climate clock" on their websites, showing that less than seven years remain to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions; the time would shrink further if actual emissions continue to rise.
Tvari Lietuva Project Manager Rugilė Matusevičiūtė notes that climate change is often seen as a distant future problem, when in reality there is less than seven years left to enact change, and hopes this framing will encourage society to act without delay.
Ignitis Group emphasizes that climate change is one of the greatest challenges of this century, requiring involvement from both the public and private sectors as well as individuals — since the energy sector, as the engine of the economy, is also the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, its transformation and decarbonisation are necessary to implement the Paris Agreement. The Group's overall objective is to cut its emissions by 47% by 2030 compared to 2020 and achieve net zero by 2050.
